The Völklingen Ironworks World Heritage Site is the only completely preserved ironworks from the heyday of industrialisation and also the first monument from this era to be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Völklingen Ironworks is an exemplary reflection of the history of high industrialisation and the Anthropocene era, the man-made age.
Today, the World Heritage Site with its numerous halls, open spaces and the captivating maze of pipe systems is a unique venue for international exhibitions, festivals and concerts. Culture is joined by nature: the paradise that emerged from the former ‘hell’ of the coking plant fascinates with the recapture of parts of the site by diverse flora and fauna.
